2021.11.27 17:39 RShah1015 Forgot the name and number of a interesting SCP I read about a few months ago.
The premise of it was a small hillside/valley overlooking outpost that had a flight of stairs descending up. However, when going up the stairs, you would simply come back to another copy of the same building with the same valley overlook. However, in these higher iterations, the plants were all dead and eventually it is found out that creatures lurked at the highest iterations. They send multiple missions of people up the steps, and eventually send up a deaf, blind, and mute person due to the effects the creatures have. It was a super in depth story and it was one of the first SCP stories I read so I would really like to find it again.

2021.11.27 17:39 NotTooDeep A brief history of the pay-per-minute psychic industry
A brief history of the pay-by-the-minute psychic industry, as best as I can remember.
In the 1980's, phone companies started offering a service in the US using 900 numbers. This was the opposite of the free, 800 numbers made popular by call centers taking orders by phone. 900 numbers became a big business for the phone companies. The big example of a 900 number businesses were talk-dirty-to-me phone sex lines, advertised in the backs of free newspapers in every town and city in America. Remember this was pre-internet, so no online porn available. These businesses all used the same mainframe switching service out of Omaha, Nebraska. You'd dial the 900 number, which would route to Omaha's mainframe, which would redirect it to a call center. There call centers were often located in the cheapest rent district of a poor area; i.e. business parks. A warehouse would be converted into an office space with hundreds of cubicles, each holding a phone and a woman. You might get your call routed to the next available phone actress, or you might be able to add an extension to the 900 number and route to your favorite, but might get put on hold until she was available.
That's the infrastructure of the pay-per-minute business model for phone workers.
Along came the Psychic Friend's Network, with Dion Warwick has the spokesperson, high quality, 30 minute informercials, and psychic readers (now) working out of their homes. The readers had to add a dedicated land line for the Omaha mainframe to route to. The other phone was used to turn the service on and off, and for emergencies, etc.
The marketing of PFN was straight forward and highly effective. They only broadcast the informercial in markets that had responded best to tests of the infomercial. They only broadcast the infomercial late at night, when people were loneliest and no one was around to talk someone out of calling. They initially had no call limits and the cash rolled in, better than a casino.
The calls cost the caller $4.99 per minute. Five cents of each minute went to Omaha. $2 went to the phone company. $2 went to TV stations. Readers made somewhere around $10/hour, so 16 cents per minute (minimum wage was 4.25 in 1992, so this was appealing to many readers).
There are four time zones in the US. The informercials ran on different stations for two or three hours in each time zone, in a rolling format, east to west, to hit those targeted loneliest hours.
Callers were predominantly female and had primarily two questions; is he the one, and is he cheating on me.
Then, in the late 80's I think, congress got involved and determined that the 900 number industry was ripe for fraud and abuse. Children were calling for phone sex and psychic readings, staying on the phone for hours at a time, and daddy was getting a phone bill for $1000's the next month.
A new law allowed a one-time refund of the entire charge for a 900 number. After that, your land line was blocked permanently from calling any 900 number. This became part of your contract with the phone company.
This hurt the 900 psychic lines the most. It turns out phone sex doesn't last that long anyway, but lonely people will stay on the phone as long as you let them.
The 900 psychic companies tested everything and determined that 12 minutes was the magic number for an upper limit. All the readers were required to sign a new agreement to end calls before they went over 12 minutes. This prevented the majority of charge backs, which is what those one time refunds were called.
How much money was changing hands? Psychic Friends Network had 2000 readers online an average of four hours per day each, during the rolling infomercial broadcasts which lasted about 8 hours total from a reader's perspective. During the broadcast, a reader's phone would ring as soon as she hung up from the last call, with another lonely person needing to talk.
$5 x 60 minutes x 2000 readers = $600,000 per hour gross revenue 8 hours probably averaged $4 million a night. That's a real business.
The internet disrupted all of this. Today, I looked at the website that is at the center of one OP's post. Here's the post: https://old.reddit.com/Psychic/comments/r36m5j/why_do_psychics/
kasamba.com is a business in NYC according to the bottom of their home page. But each reader appears to be setting their own rates per minute. They're probably independent contractors. There's no limit to the number of minutes. There's no telling where on the planet the readers are based. This is the internet; images mean nothing and they're all behind this website that connects the lonely to a reader. Sound familiar?
Ten psychics listed on the home page, three have "love" in their usernames. I mean that's really good target marketing. Nothing wrong from a business perspective. But with no limits on time and no regulation, it really is a buyer beware business model. Use it at your own risk.
I am sure there are wonderful readers using these services. I knew readers that worked on Psychic Friends Network and other other services. Some of them were in my clairvoyant training class and I know how well they could read. They all had different reasons for reading through a service. I never had the desire. I had other interests in other careers.
The 900 number businesses did have other limits, for example requiring every reader to have the 800 number for the suicide prevention line in front of them during readings. Let the professionals handle for free those in dire straights. This was not purely an ethical decision. It was also a faster way to get back to the lonely people that would pay for a full 12 minutes once a week, every week, for years.

2021.11.27 17:39 TFoll6 Temper tantrums from a twenty-something year old.
This happened a few years ago, but I wanted to contribute something to this sub finally!
When I first started grad school, I joined a D&D group that my now very good friend was DMing. He was a rookie dm and almost all the players were newbies too, myself included. Honestly, it was super fun and everyone was very chill and encouraging, except one player who we will call Curtis.
Everyone in the party was good/neutral except Curtis, who was playing a chaotic evil fighter that would sometimes actively try to sabotage our goals or antagonize us (red flag number 1). When his plans failed, he felt like everyone and the dm were plotting against his character. He was usually whiny and short-tempered, but the first actual tantrum he had was about his superiority die. He had used all of his charges and when the dm reminded him of this, he went full on five year old and threw his dice across the table while pouting (red flag number 2).
The ultimate meltdown happened one session while the party was escorting an npc to a magic item that would also help the party. The npc was an interesting guy who got along with all of us, especially my glamour bard. Out of the blue, Curtis decides to start bullying the npc and trying to steal his belongings right in front of everyone. The monk in our party steps up and confronts Curtis, which ultimately ends up in the dreaded player vs player combat since Curtis refused to back off. Wanting to also help out the npc, my bard starts giving inspiration to the monk and this is where Curtis loses it.
Red in the face, he screams out of character, “I’m just doing what my character would do and everyone is attacking me! You all just clearly hate me so I guess I’ll just leave and be done playing with you!” After that uncomfortable outburst, we calmly explained that it wasn’t personal, and that our characters were standing up for their friend, because we were doing what our characters would do too. We said we did still want to play with him, but we wanted to play WITH him where we could all be working together. He tweaked his character a little bit after that to be more of a team player, but everyone still walked on eggshells when he was at the table. He graduated a few months later and moved away, and we went on to have so many great sessions and one-shots with the best people I’ve ever played with. I don’t know what Curtis is up to now, but hopefully he’s doing ok and learned from that session if he’s still playing!

2021.11.27 17:39 UnderstandingOk4811 I play CoD strictly for dick and nothing else
Background: I am a (22)f and I have been playing video games since I was 7 y/o. I have a lot of games I like, but CoD is not one of them.
I think CoD zombies can get hella repetitive after awhile, and I certainly couldn't get myself to play it solo. The only times Ive played call of duty is to get into someone's pants. I have played CoD zombies with 2 dudes and I slept with both of them. I am going to play again tomorrow with a guy who is probably going to hook up with me. I feel as though I should be ashamed of this- but is it my fault for appealing to the interests of these guys? It's been a tactic with a 100% success rate so far.
